IC 2006

A conference on mathematical methods in physics, IC 2006, is going on in Rio de Janeiro since Monday and it is ending tomorrow. Today we had talks by Gazeau, Mund, Schoer, Novello, Oliveira, Shapiro, Elizalde and me. From cosmology and noncommutative field theory to, believe it or not, algebraic field theory. Some talks were quite interesting. Tomorrow the talks will be mainly on string theory and field theory. The temperature in Rio today was around 24C but we were freezing at the seminar room. Somebody please fix the air conditioning...

School in Field Theory and Gravitation in Brazil

The school is going on since Monday in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro. I just spent the day there to see people and to go to some talks.

I arrived when Roman Jackiw was already answering questions so I missed it all. Then João Magueijo talked about double special relativity, higher derivative theories and modified dispersion relations. I did not quite understand the setting, it seemed that all is some sort of effective theory. Then Rogério Rosenfeld gave a nice talk on little Higgs. It was a quite clear presentation but I still bet in supersymmetry. The next lecture was by Woolgar presenting some work on Ricci flows. It was interesting. Then Dimitry Galtsov talked about the old problem of back reaction. His former talk was in flat spacetime and he then moved to curved spacetime. Quite complicated! Then Rosenfeld presented another talk in the place of Angela Olinto because she didn´t show up. This time he talked about a model which mixes dark energy and dark matter. The last talk was given by Barton Zwiebach. It was the last lecture of a series of three. He explained how to get the vacuum solution of string field theory, Bernoulli numbers, 691 and the Riemann hypothesis! Uau!!

The school program is quite heavy for the students. Eight one hour lectures is too much. Many of them were already tired. The conference place is quite good and the organizers did a nice work.

Talvez porisso Harvard seja Harvad e a USP seja a USP.

Vale a pena ler.

Carlos Nunez lectures

Carlos Nunez, from Swansea U., gave four lectures on gravity/gauge theory duality at Sao Paulo U. this week. The lectures were very good. Instead of giving too many technical details he stressed the conceptual side making sure that everybody understood how it works. It was really good. The audience kept asking many questions and progress was slow. But that was good since all people could explain their difficulties. Unfortunatly no notes are available. Hope he can write up something and come back some time in the future.

What a particle physicist do when everything else fails

10. Subtract infinity

9. Add heavy fermions

8. Set all fermion masses to zero

7. Invent another symmetry

6. Throw it on the lattice

5. Blame it to the Planck scale

4. Recall the success of the SM

3. Invoke the Anthropic Principle

2. Wave hands a lot, speak with a strong accent

1. Manipulate the data

(From Dorigo's blog)

I would add one more point:

0. Claim that String Theory will solve the problem.

Café com piernas

This post is dedicated to my friend Jorge Gamboa.

If you go to Santiago, capital of Chile, you have to go to "café com piernas". They are everywhere downtown. You enter into the coffee shop, modern decoration, walls covered with mirrors, and really really beautiful girls come to serve you a cup of coffee. You shouldn't stare too much at them. But that is difficult because they wear mini-skirts, in fact, microscopical skirts. Jorge Gamboa takes all his guests to café com piernas at least once. He is a great admirer of this Chilean attraction.

Now it is becoming internationally renowned. There is an article at Folha de S. Paulo giving some historical infomation. Unfortunately you need a subscription to read it and also have to know some Portuguese. But my friends which speak Spanish can read some parts of it which are copied below. By the way, café com piernas was tried in São Paulo, but it failed. I don't understand why!

Falha nossa! E recolheu a linha.

UPDATE: Mais comentários num artigo do New Scientist.

O título é: "String Theory: With a View Towards Reality".

Bert Schroer, again

Yesterday Peter Woit received some notes from Bert Schroer about Lagrangian path integral and algebraic quantum field theory. As expected, Schroer tries to dismiss all approaches to QFT except his own. Lubos Motl was really quick in pointing out the technical mistakes and wrong statements about the path integrals results in Schroer's notes so I will no repeat them here. To those interested in more details see the discussion on the spinning top and the hydrogen atom in Kleinert's book. As Lubos points out,

every known well-defined problem in any quantum mechanical system with a classical limit that is solvable using other methods is also solvable using path integrals. And of course, one obtains the right results. Moreover, path integrals are superior in their treatment of non-perturbative corrections (instantons) and gauge symmetries (Faddeev-Popov ghosts). They have become the canonical way to define the Lorentz-covariant prescription for perturbative amplitudes in string theory. Attempts to remove path integrals from physics in 2006 are plain ludicrous.

I would add that AQFT, the approach advocated by Schroer, is in such a precarious state that it can say nothing about non-abelian gauge theories, instantons or other non-perturbative effects, or even loop corrections to the standard model. The effects of loop corrections were measured in several accelerators and the agreement with experiment is excelent.

While Schroer statements are largely ignored and not taken seriously in the USA and Europe, here in Brazil the situation is dramatically distinct. Being a retired German professor living in Brazil he has an aura of a great scientist which was nourished by his Brazilian subordinates. His statements are used by physicists that do not support research in particle physics and sometimes they become an obstacle to the development of the area. Besides that we also have troubles with misguided students. What a student can say when he is told by Schroer or his followers that path integrals are not mathematically well defined and should not be used (like in the notes just released)? Or that the phi to the fourth scalar theory is trivial (inducing the idea that QFT is trivial as well)? Or that the perturbative series of QED is not convergent (casting doubts on the vality of QED and not saying that it is part of the electroweak theory)? Or when they hear statements that supersymmetry and string theory are just rubbish and you should not waste time on them (when string theory is the main research topic today and supersymmetry is expected to be found at LHC)? We have to spend a lot of energy teaching these students and other colleagues what is the real situation in the area. Just to show the prestige of Schroer in Brazil, he is giving a colloquium in the main Brazilian university next Thursday. He is going to talk about the history of QFT and I wonder how many people will get a false image of the area. So what can we do? We just keep working honestly and trying to tell the truth to the students and colleagues. Next week we will have a series of 4 lectures on AdS/CFT given by Carlos Nunez from Swansea University. This is the best way to promote good research in science. Being sociable and civilized even with those that do not accept the modern world and its new ideas.

UPDATE: I received an e-mail from João Barata asking about the subordinates mentioned in the text. Clearly João is not one of them since his work is independent and he has his own opinions. He works and has interest in several topics, including AQFT, but he is wise in recognizing the advantages and limitations of each approach. I never had you in mind João!

UPDATE: Today I met Bert in my Institute and we had a very friendly conversation. He was much less radical than in his writings. In a long talk we both agreed that the path integral and AQFT has its advantages and limitations. And that some aspects of field theory may be better described by one formalism than the other. All in all he was much more moderate. He was also worried because some people may think that we have personal problems. That is not true.

International Meeting on QFT (II)

Today we had a good review talk on noncommutative quantum field theory by M. Gomes from São Paulo U. He presented a good introduction about noncommutativity and talked mostly on supersymmetric theories. The second talk was by P. M. Neto from Rio de Janeiro Federal U. and it was about the Casimir effect. The presentation was good but with too many experimental data. It was a little bit out of the main topics of the conference. After lunch we went to a public PhD thesis defense about some condended matter topics. The last talk was given by A. Blin from Coimbra U. about the quantization of the metric conformal factor and its contribution to particle physics. So that is the end. Today was the last day.

O artigo do prof. Schroer pode ser acessado aqui: String theory and the crisis in particle physics ; os meus comentários podem ser vistos aqui: Ideology, sociology and psychology of strings; comentários de outros autores podem ser encontrados aqui.

O prof.

International Meeting on QFT

There is a meeting on quantum field theory going on at Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais in Brazil. It is organized by the local people working in QFT and it is being held at the university which has a nice and green campus. It started on April 10 and ends tomorrow.

Today the first talk was by P. Gieres from Lyon on noncommutative quantum mechanics. He started discussing the possible deformations of the canonical commutation relations and analised the consequences. There was also a talk by M. Sampaio from the local university on a new proposal for regulating divergent integrals called implicit regularization. It has some advantages but it is not clear that it is really better to the other knows regularization schemes. The important point is that the implicit regularization technique has been developed by the local people.

The best talk was given by D. Stockinger from Durham on dimensional regularization and dimensional reduction. It seems that there is new progress regarding dimensional reduction. Dimensional regularization has problems with fermions and it is difficult to be used in the supersymetric case. Dimensional reduction is inconsistent because some identities involving Levi-Civita tensors are not true when momenta are extended to arbitrary dimensions but the gauge fields and fermions are kept in 4D. It seems they found a way out. They consider an inifinite dimensional space-time which has subspaces of D and 4 dimensions. They claim that the identities involving the Levi-Civita tensor can now make sense. It is not clear how it works. He then proceeded to apply dimensional reduction to the MSSM. It looked good.

Eurostrings 2006 (III)

Last day! Many good talks today. I just want to mention two of them. One by Thorn on SU(N) N=4 SYM when N=infinite. There is just one quark-antiquark bound state at weak coupling while at strong coupling there is an infinite number of them. Very nice.

Another interesting talk was given by Bachas. He showed how to apply string techniques to solve capillarity and wetting problems. He even found an UV/IR connection in the case where the surface cointaining the fluid has high curvature. So it seems a new field is born: applied string theory. If LHC provides no proof to string theory string theorists will not loose their job, they can just change to applied string theory!

Eurostrings 2006 (II)

There were several interesting talks today. Schwarz talked about string theory books, in fact about just two books. He told some stories about the GSW book (it took only 9 months to write both volumes!) and announced his new book written together with two other collaborators. The new book is on strings and M-theory and looks like an update on the GSW book. He presented the table of contents and it looks quite good with very recent material included in it. It has more than 700 pages and will be available late this year.

The talk on susy quantum mechanics by Veneziano was funny. He found that the number of states in his model is related to the combinatorics of necklaces! And how he found out this relationship? Using Google...

Gibbons tried to resurrect the old steady state cosmology as a source for inflation. And also included a Born-Infeld type formulation of gravity.

Seiberg talked about a new mechanism for dynamical susy breaking which was published earlier this year. Nothing new was added.

Other talks were more technical. Like Strominger trying to show why there is a square in ZBH = |Z|2TOP.

Eurostrings 2006

The Eurostrings 2006 conference is going quite well. There were some seminars on quantum field theory and even one on loop quantum gravity besides the usual string talks. Arkani-Hamed didn't show up and was replaced by the LQG talk. Very appropriate indeed! Live streaming is here and the recorded talks are here. The main speakers will talk tomorrow and saturday. Unfortunatly no wireless is available!

Preces e homeopatia funcionam?
